The concept of Smart Grid refers to power monitoring, remote management and smart automatic control over the electric loads by both, users and utilities. The remote management of microgrids and microgeneration is also considered. These solutions provide great energy savings and flatten power demand curves.
In a first approach, Smart Grid referred to the use of the electricity distribution networks to transmit consumption and remote management data. Nowadays, due to the extensive use and availability of broadband communications, it is more efficient to accomplish remote communications via Internet. Therefore, the transfers through the electricity network are carried out only locally or along medium distances, but the concept still remains the same.
In the next figure, the Smart Grid overview is shown as well as all the involved agents: generation, control, billing and demand.
VDI develops solutions for implementing the concept of Smart Grid in different areas using proprietary technology.
